California

Pretty funny stuff, Arnold.

This is me a few years ago in the area near Mt. Whitney, southern Sierra Nevada mountains, on a November 1st. I was with my daughter, Marion, to visit the WWII Japanese detention camp near Independance. That was not pretty funny stuff.

First you laugh, then you cry. What is it with celebs and politics in the USA? Ah, well, democracy is a fine thing with many heads.

The detention camp must have been pretty harrowing. Am right in thinking this was a centre for US-based Japanese during the war? I don't know what the conditions were like, but can imagine they weren't very pleasant. Ours weren't either, I'm ashamed to say. Not quite sure why civilians were being punished for the evils committed by their countrymen at war and in Japanese POW camps, but human nature is not always fair or logical. Good on Marion for going with you though. I think it's important for young people to understand history, some of which we'd all prefer not to see repeated.

My eldest had the opportunity of going to Auschwitz earlier this year. Some on her tour didn't go - she did, feeling it would be dismissive not to. It is important to know the depths to which humans can sink, as well as the heights to which they can soar.

Soar on Dan.
